Layout assessment

Comfortable — room fits table, chairs, and circulation.

Add 10 cm between chair centres if you prefer more elbow room. For bench seating on one side, halve the chair width input and treat the result as a guide only.

How to use this tool

Enter dining room width and length, then table dimensions and typical chair width. Clearances default to 90 cm — the space needed when a guest pushes back from the table.

Review seats per side and total capacity before buying a table. If the layout is tight, consider a narrower table, bench seating on one side, or a round table in a square room.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does each dining chair need?

Allow about 60 cm per diner along the table edge, including chair width and a small gap. Rectangular tables seat people on both long sides; square tables use all four sides. End seats need extra clearance when chairs slide back.

What clearance do I need behind dining chairs?

Plan 90 cm from the table edge to walls or sideboards so guests can push chairs back comfortably. Narrow galley dining areas may work at 75 cm minimum, but circulation behind seated diners will feel tight.

Round or rectangular table for a small dining room?

Round tables suit small square rooms because they soften corners and equalize reach. Rectangular tables fit long narrow dining rooms and seat more people along one axis. Use this calculator with your actual room width and length before buying.
