Frequently asked questions
What do WCAG AA and AAA contrast ratings mean?
AA is the baseline for readable body text on walls, menus, and signage. AAA is safer for small labels, long paragraphs, or low-light areas. Large headings (18pt+ or bold) can pass with a lower ratio than small text.
What contrast ratio should I aim for on interior signage?
Aim for at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large headings to meet AA. Wayfinding, safety labels, and rental instructions benefit from AAA where possible. Test your exact wall paint and vinyl or print colors here before ordering.
Does contrast matter for purely decorative color pairs?
Decorative pairings do not need to pass WCAG, but if any text, icons, or numbers appear on those colors, check contrast anyway. Many design issues come from subtle tints that look fine to the eye but fail accessibility checks.
