Frequently asked questions
How many lux do I need at home?
Typical targets are about 150 lx in living rooms, 200–300 lx in kitchens at work height, and 100–150 lx in bedrooms for general ambient light. Task lamps add local brightness; this calculator estimates total lumens from floor area and room type.
How do lumens relate to the number of bulbs?
Total lumens equals lux multiplied by floor area in square metres. Divide by the lumens per bulb you plan to use (often 800–1 100 lm for LED retrofits) to get fixture count. LED efficacy near 80 lm/W helps estimate wattage.
Should I rely only on ceiling lights?
Layer ambient, task, and accent lighting for comfort. Use this tool for baseline ceiling load, then add dimmers, under-cabinet strips, and floor lamps. Dimmers let you run fewer lumens at full brightness in the evening.
