Room size

Measure the full floor area where the rug will sit, in centimetres.

Width and depth of the sofa and coffee table zone the rug should anchor.

Overhang & border

Recommended rug width

320 cm

Recommended rug length

250 cm

Fits in room

Yes — dimensions fit with the floor border you set.

Compare the result with standard rug sizes from your retailer. In open-plan spaces, a slightly larger rug often helps define the living zone.

How to use this tool

Measure the room and the sofa or seating grouping the rug should anchor. Default overhang values follow common interior rules: 20 cm at sides, more at the front where feet rest on the rug.

Check that the recommended size leaves your chosen floor border around the edges. If the rug is too large, reduce overhang or pick a smaller grouping dimension before shopping.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a rug extend beyond furniture?

In living rooms, the rug should extend at least 15–20 cm beyond the sofa grouping on each side so front legs sit on the rug. In dining rooms, chairs should remain on the rug when pulled out — add about 60–75 cm beyond the table edge on each side.

How much floor should show around a rug?

Leave 30–45 cm of bare floor between the rug edge and walls so the room feels balanced. A rug that fills the entire floor can make the space look smaller; a border of visible flooring frames the seating zone.

Should I round rug dimensions to standard sizes?

Standard sizes such as 160×230 cm or 200×300 cm are close to many calculated results. Round up to the next standard size if your supplier sells fixed dimensions — slightly larger rugs often look more generous in open-plan rooms.
